Prof. Dr. Heinrich Kiel

Prof. Dr. Kiel, born 1961, studied law at the Christian Albrecht University in Kiel, where he obtained his doctorate in 1990. After completing his legal education, he joined the labour court system of the state of Lower Saxony in October 1991. He worked at the labour courts in Hanover and Celle. From 1994 to 1996, he was seconded to the Federal Labour Court as a research assistant.

In 1997, Prof. Dr. Kiel was appointed Director of the Labour Court in Celle. In 2000, he was appointed Presiding Judge at the Regional Labour Court and in 2006 Vice-President of the Regional Labour Court of Lower Saxony. In 2007, Prof. Dr. Kiel moved to the State Audit Office of Lower Saxony as a senior civil servant.

Following his election as a judge at the Federal Labour Court, he was assigned to the Seventh Senate in July 2009, where he has been Deputy Chairman since 2014. After his appointment as Presiding Judge at the Federal Labour Court on 1 November 2018, Prof. Dr Kiel was appointed Chairman of the Ninth Senate. The Ninth Senate is primarily responsible for holiday entitlement, part-time employment, employee status and matter relating to employment references.

In April 2011, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University Hannover awarded Prof. Dr. Kiel an honorary professorship.

On 27 February, Prof. Dr. Heinrich Kiel was appointed Vice-President of the Federal Labour Court.
